How the 3D Finite Element Analysis Studio works

3D FEA Studio is an educational structural-analysis tool for built-in beam and cube shapes. Configure dimensions, a fixed support face, material properties, and directional forces, then explore response results in the browser.

The Workflow
1

Choose a Built-In Shape

Select a beam or cube and set its dimensions. The studio creates a subdivided model surface for display.

2

Assign Material Properties

Choose a preset from the material library and edit the available fields, including Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, density, yield strength, hardening modulus, ultimate strength, and thermal expansion. The current response calculation uses elastic modulus, Poisson's ratio, yield strength, and isotropic hardening.

The studio tracks approximate plastic-strain history across load changes. Use Clear plastic history to start a fresh material history.

3

Set the Fixed Support

Select a fixed support and choose which of the six faces is restrained. Forces are applied to the opposite face, and a support face must be selected to run a study.

Markers identify the selected support and applied forces.

4

Apply Directional Forces

Add one or more forces, each with an X, Y, or Z axis, a positive or negative direction, and a magnitude in newtons. Loads act on the face opposite the fixed support.

Choose the number of increments for the loading calculation. Set forces to zero removes the applied force while retaining plastic history; clear that history separately when needed.

5

Adjust the Display Mesh

Adjust mesh density to change the subdivisions of the displayed box surface. The panel shows vertex and approximate element counts plus a coarse qualitative density label.

6

Solve the Structural Problem

The studio estimates structural response over the selected load increments and updates stress using a simplified small-strain von Mises (J2) plasticity model with isotropic hardening.

Available result contours include:

  • Displacement magnitude and X/Y/Z displacement
  • Total strain magnitude
  • Von Mises, maximum principal, and maximum shear stress
  • Equivalent plastic strain and yielded regions

The interface also reports support reactions and, where available, compares the response with a simplified elastic beam reference.

7

Visualize and Inspect Results

Choose among the available stress, strain, plasticity, yielded-region, and displacement contours, then inspect the deformed model in the 3D view.

Post-processing controls include:

  • Adjustable deformation scale and animation
  • Original-geometry overlay and wireframe mode
  • Load, support, and reaction markers
  • Reaction force and moment summary
  • Node inspection with coordinates, local results, and safety-factor estimates
  • X, Y, or Z clipping plane

Rotate, pan, zoom, or switch to a front camera preset to compare contour patterns and deformation.

8

Save, Reopen, and Share the Study

Save the current settings in this browser's local storage and reopen them later, or export/import project settings as JSON.

After running a study, export the nodal results in an Excel-compatible workbook or create a standalone HTML summary report.

Engineering Reference

The studio uses simplified structural response calculations and a subdivided display surface. Review dimensions, units, material inputs, support face, and force direction when setting up a study.

Educational Purpose

3D FEA Studio is an educational browser tool for exploring how geometry, material settings, supports, and forces relate to structural response.
